Inside the Captain's Table Restaurant

The Captain's Table Restaurant received its name in honor of Newfoundland's greatest hero, Captain William Jackman - the great grandfather of the co-owner and Head Chef, Arthur Jackman.

Officially opened on the 17 July, 1987, The Captain's Table Restaurant has always been a successful family business. The secret is simple:
Art's fine cooking skills combined with Phyllis's professional customer service.

Phyllis, Art's wife, is also a co-owner and has been Head Server and Hostess since the very beginning. Lisa, their daughter, started as a server and has now worked her way up to personnel manager.

In 1992, Canada Post issued a national stamp PLEASE CLICK TO SEE A LARGER VERSIONhonoring Captain William Jackman as a legendary Canadian hero. On September 08, 1992, a ceremony was conducted by Canada Post officials in Renews, Newfoundland, the hero's birthplace. During this special occasion, The Captain's Table was presented with a framed enlargement of the stamp for display in the restaurant.

Since 1997, The Captain's Table Restaurant has been featured (three years in a row!) in the Oberon Press publication, ' Where To Eat In Canada'. In its 30th year, Where to Eat in Canada is an independent guide to Canadian restaurants from coast to coast -- the first ever published and the only one of its kind on the market today.

According to Anne Hardy, the book's editor, "We accept no free meals, we take no payment for listings. Nobody can buy his way into this guide and nobody can buy his way out. People believe what we say because they know we don't get paid to say it." Needless to say, the Captain and his crew are quite proud to receive this prestigious honor.

Starting out with just four tables in a small dining room, The Captain's Table has certainly grown over the past 14 years. In 1997, major renovations were undertaken thanks to the unwavering efforts of Art and Phyllis's good friend, John Barry.

Completed in 1998, the extensive renovations included a larger dining room with fireplace, increased kitchen and storage capacity, and a replica of a fishing schooner and outport village in front of the building as designed by well-known Newfoundland Artist, Frank LaPoint. In addition, the Captain's Table also became the fortunate home of original prints by renowned Canadian Artist, Anne Meredith Barry.

During the busy summer season, the Captain's Table now employs 12 full time crew. They are very hard working and committed to delivering the Captain's Promise : the finest foods, properly prepared and splendidly served.
